Deleting Notebooks
Deleting notebooks isn’t as easy as you might think. You won’t find a Delete command to use in OneNote. Instead, you must use File Explorer (or Windows Explorer for Windows 7 users) to remove a notebook. Mac users can use Finder to remove the notebook. If the notebook is in the cloud, you can log on to your OneDrive account to delete the file. When you delete a notebook, it’s moved to the Recycle Bin where you can permanently remove it. Any items in the notebook aren’t recoverable once you delete the notebook from the Recycle Bin.
Delete a Notebook from Your Computer
You can delete a notebook you keep stored on your computer using Windows File Explorer. When you delete a locally stored notebook in File Explorer, it’s removed to the Windows Recycle Bin, where all deleted files and folders go. The notebook is not permanently gone until you empty the Recycle Bin.
Open File Explorer (or Windows Explorer if you’re a Windows 7 user); click or tap the File Explorer icon on the taskbar.
- Navigate to the notebook file you want to remove.
- Right-click or press and hold the notebook name.
Click or tap Delete from the shortcut menu.
- To permanently remove the file, right-click or press and hold the Recycle Bin icon.
Click or tap Empty Recycle Bin.
A warning prompt box appears; click or tap Yes to delete the file(s).
Delete a Notebook from OneDrive
You can remove notebooks you no longer need from your cloud storage using OneDrive’s Delete button. Files and folders you delete on OneDrive are moved to the online Recycle Bin. Keep in mind that anyone you shared the notebook with can no longer access the file either.
- Open OneDrive.
Navigate to the notebook file you want to remove.
- Move the mouse pointer over the notebook name and click or tap the check box.
Click or tap Delete and the file is immediately removed.
- To permanently remove the notebook from your cloud storage, click or tap the Menu button.
Click or tap Recycle bin.
- Click or tap the notebook check box.
Click or tap Delete.
A warning prompt box appears; click or tap Delete to delete the notebook.
