Summary
The Bluetooth SIG is actively working on specification enhancements to enable new usage scenarios beyond the cable replacement applications present in the version 1.x specifications. Three of theseenhanced radios, local positioning, and printingare highlighted here. Several other efforts are underway, including enhanced service discovery profiles, still image, multimedia applications, automotive applications, personal area networking, and others. All of these are described in greater detail in the second edition of our book, Bluetooth Revealed.
The open Bluetooth specification enables all sorts of new applications, and some of these are being standardized within the SIG. These might be only the beginning of potential future applications of Bluetooth technology, with others likely to appear in the future.
