EMC: An Example of Focus
EMC is a product-centric technology company that makes hardware to store data. A brief examination of EMC's company web site (www.emc.com) provides a good example of the new services reality. EMC service offerings are equally distributed among support services, education services, and professional services. Their professional service offerings include the following:
Consulting and assessment: Delivering financial, operational, and business impact justifications; helping clients to attain business goals while leveraging the current infrastructure.
Implementation and integration: Designing and executing implementations to fully integrate optimum e-infostructure architecture within the client's environment.
Operations management: Services for the operation, administration, and general management of a storage solution that includes cooperatively designing and implementing core storage management policies, processes, and procedures.
Areas of expertise listed for EMC professional services staff include networked storage, business continuance, backup and restoration, and data migration.
Clearly, EMC appears to be investing heavily in the ability to offer a complete service portfolio to their client base. However, EMC remains very crisp on what solutions and skills are core to the company. Within two clicks of entering the web site, a potential customer can reach the page on global services (see Figure 1), which succinctly outlines consulting offerings aligned to the core products and competencies of the company.
