Creating Your Own Ringtones
Besides just downloading ringtones from online services, you can also create your own Melodies from existing MIDI audio files -- or even from scratch. There are several Japanese PC programs that can translate a MIDI file into the ringtone format for i-mode, which can then be downloaded to your handset. Once it reaches the mobile phone, you can listen to the downloaded ringtone and save it.
In addition, most i-mode handsets on the market now have ringtone composers built right into the phone. This allows you to create your own ringtones by pressing certain key combinations. But beware, unless you're a musician, this method is usually a painstaking way to create something that you will be proud of.
In order to help those of us who are not budding composers, Chakumatic.com ( http://www.chakumatic.com/chakumatic/english/) is a great online resource that shows the sequence for inputting i-mode melodies. This site offers listings of key combinations for popular rock, pop, classical, and jazz tunes. First browse the listings to find the song you want. Then Chakumatic will show the key combinations that you will input, depending on the type of handset that you have. For example, Figure 2 shows the key sequence for the X-File theme.

That's all there is to it! Now you can replace the boring wallpaper and ringtone that you've used on your handset since you bought it. Be creative and make your own original download fun.
