The Safari web browser that comes preinstalled with iOS 8 (as well as OS X Yosemite on the Mac) works in conjunction with iCloud in several ways. For example, when turned on, iCloud functionality will automatically sync your Bookmarks and Favorites list between your iPhone, iPad, and/or Mac(s), so all of your most frequented and favorite websites are always just a few clicks away.
In addition, iCloud syncs your Safari-related Reading List and, thanks to iOS 8’s Handoff feature, keeps track of all open browser windows, allowing you to start web surfing on one computer or iOS mobile device, and continue exactly where you left off on another. When it comes to keeping track of website-specific usernames, passwords, and other details, another handy feature is iCloud Keychain.
iCloud Keychain Automatically Remembers Your Usernames, Passwords and More
When iCloud Keychain is turned on, Safari automatically remembers the username and password you create for each website you visit. Later, when you return to a website, the Username and Password fields will be automatically filled in, so you can log into websites faster, and without having to remember your log in details. Plus, as a password is initially being created, the iCloud Keychain feature will offer a secure password recommendation.
iCloud Keychain can also keep track of your credit/debit card details used to make online purchases, as well as your address. Thus, when you’re shopping online, completing purchase transactions is faster and more efficient. This feature is separate from the new Apple Pay service.
One of the useful features of iCloud Keychain is that all of the usernames, passwords, and other information is securely stored online within your iCloud account, and then automatically syncs with all of the computers and iOS mobile devices that are linked to your iCloud account.
It’s important to understand that while iCloud Keychain can be a time saving feature that eliminates the need to remember dozens or hundreds of unique website-specific usernames and passwords, it’s not a feature that should be utilized by everyone. Plus, to take full advantage of this feature, it must be activated and customized once on each of your iOS mobile devices and Macs that are linked to the same iCloud account.
