Redbox Instant
Content: Movies and TV
Cost: $8/month
Platforms: Android (select devices), Blu-ray players from Samsung, Google TV, iPad/iPhone, Smart TVs from Samsung and LG, Xbox with Xbox Live Gold Subscription, and the web
With its omnipresent red kiosks, Redbox has practically resuscitated the dying brick-and-mortar video rental business. Now, the company (in partnership with Verizon) is taking a page from Netflix's book by offering its own unlimited movie streaming service. The $8/month subscription provides unlimited viewing and 4 DVD rental credits at Redbox's kiosks. The wide range of supported devices and affordable pricing make Redbox tempting, but there are some drawbacks: Its streaming selection isn't as extensive of Netflix's, so finding things you want to watch may be more challenging, it doesn't offer TV shows as of this writing, and HD content maxes out at 720p.
