Summary
Partitions give the Oracle environment a great deal of additional flexibility by providing a greater degree of distribution of file I/O, breaking tables and/or indexes into smaller pieces that can be located on different physical devices. Smaller pieces are easier to manage, back up, and restore. Different index partitioning schemes accommodate a variety of application needs. The local index is more efficient for Oracle to process, but the global index gives the flexibility of different partitioning keys and underlying partitioning from that of the original table.
