CF-Q1: What entities comprise configuration management?
CF-A1: Application software either purchased or developed in-house running on mainframes, servers or desktops; database management software running on mainframes or servers; system software running on mainframes, servers or desktops; network software; data center, network or desktop hardware.
CF-Q2: How is configuration management different from software migration?
CF-A2: Software migration is actually a subset of configuration management in which a new version of an application, an operating system or a database system is implemented across multiple mainframes, servers or desktops.
CF-Q3: What role, if any, does asset management play in configuration management?
CF-A3: Asset management normally consists of maintaining an accurate inventory of the exact number and version or model of each piece of software and hardware within an IT environment. It also includes all of the licenses, contracts and maintenance agreements for each entry in the inventory. Assent management normally does not describe the inter-relationships of hardware and software to each other which is the mainstay of a comprehensive configuration management process.
CF-Q4: What effect, if any, did Y2K have on configuration management?
CF-A4: In many shops in the United States Y2K actually improved configuration management by forcing application inventories to be updated for accuracy. Duplicate, unused or retired applications were often discovered as a result of trying to determine which applications in an organization were Y2K compliant and which were not.
