Change the Size of Your Cache
While Internet Explorer can't be configured to automatically empty its cache, you can change the size of the cache. The smaller the cache, the speedier Internet Explorer will be.
Here's how to change the cache size in Internet Explorer 9:
- Click the Tools (gear) button and select Internet Options.
- When the Internet Options dialog box appears, select the General tab.
- Go to the Browsing History section and click the Settings button.
- When the Temporary Internet Files and History Settings dialog box appears, set the Disk Space setting to the desired number.
- Click the OK button.
What's the right size? While you can set a cache as small as 8 MB, I recommend something in the 50 MB range. Anything much smaller is less than useful, and anything much larger simply takes up disk space and slows down your browser.
