Editing Software Instruments

GarageBand has a great collection of Software Instruments, but there is going to come a time when you want to tweak an instrument to make it sound just right, or you might even want to perform massive surgery on an instrument to give it a sound all your own. We will go into depth about creating your instruments in Chapter 8, "Making Your Own Software and Real Instruments." But for now we'll show you how to alter a Software Instrument and save it as part of your song.

Software Instrument Settings

If you open the Track Info window, you will notice a triangle marked Details... in the lower-left corner of the window. If you click that triangle, suddenly the Track Info window expands and you can find all the settings which make each Software Instrument unique. Take a look at Figure 3.11.

The Two Parts of a Software Instrument: Generators and Effects

There are basically two parts that make up a Software Instrument: a generator, which creates the instrument's sound, and effects, which alter the instrument's sound.

The main difference between a Software Instrument and a Real Instrument in GarageBand is whether or not the instrument uses a generator to make sound.

If you are feeling brave, you can adjust the settings inside the Track Info window for the current instrument and then close the Track Info window, and your changes will be applied to the instrument and be saved along with your current song when you save your song.

However, if you change the track's instrument before saving your song, your changes will be lost.

Saving an Instrument

If you tweak the settings in your current instrument and then attempt to change the instrument for the current track, you will get a dialog asking you if you want to save the file before switching to a new one. You can select Don't Save, which simply forgets the tweaks that you made and loads the new instrument. If you select Save, you are presented with a Save As dialog, which allows you to save your tweaked instrument under a name of your own invention.

You can also click the Save Instrument button in the lower-right corner of the Track Info window and you will be presented with the same Save As dialog.

Service Announcements

On rare occasions it is necessary to send out a strictly service related announcement. For instance, if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance we might send users an email. Application and System Logs

Pearson automatically collects log data to help ensure the delivery, availability and security of this site. Log data may include technical information about how a user or visitor connected to this site, such as browser type, type of computer/device, operating system, internet service provider and IP address. We use this information for support purposes and to monitor the health of the site, identify problems, improve service, detect unauthorized access and fraudulent activity, prevent and respond to security incidents and appropriately scale computing resources.

Web Analytics

Pearson may use third party web trend analytical services, including Google Analytics, to collect visitor information, such as IP addresses, browser types, referring pages, pages visited and time spent on a particular site. While these analytical services collect and report information on an anonymous basis, they may use cookies to gather web trend information. The information gathered may enable Pearson (but not the third party web trend services) to link information with application and system log data. Pearson uses this information for system administration and to identify problems, improve service, detect unauthorized access and fraudulent activity, prevent and respond to security incidents, appropriately scale computing resources and otherwise support and deliver this site and its services.

Cookies and Related Technologies

This site uses cookies and similar technologies to personalize content, measure traffic patterns, control security, track use and access of information on this site, and provide interest-based messages and advertising. Users can manage and block the use of cookies through their browser. Disabling or blocking certain cookies may limit the functionality of this site.

Do Not Track
