I’ve never felt an overwhelming need to move information from my PC to my SmartPhone, but having been peripherally aware that many people want to go mobile, I’ve made a number of attempts.

With my old phone, which was essentially a dumb phone, I tried a USB transfer utility and encountered a number of issues which basically made it easier to just key in my entries manually on the phone.

More recently I decided to use an online synchronization utility to try to get my data on the Internet, figuring it was the next best thing to having it on the phone.

In either case, I avoided the use of the true Windows Mobile Server or Exchange Server, since I am and mainly write for a more limited scope of end users who work without these higher end features.

But I recently upgraded to a real SmartPhone running Windows Mobile 5.0 — which I knew was not the latest version but I figured I could get it working. It also had Bluetooth capability, so with that and the included USB connector and installation disc, I figured I was in business.

However, initially, many of the issues I encountered previously, which included conflicting versions of Outlook, reared their ugly heads again. For one thing I am running Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium, neither of which the SmartPhone or its included software recognized.

I did have a lot more luck installing my Bluetooth device driver and having it "find" my phone. First I set it up through Control Panel’s Bluetooth option, and the phone and computer discovered each other after I put in my own pin number.

I also managed to have the phone’s icon pop up in My Computer, and setup my PIM connection in Control Panel to have everything go to and from Outlook.

But in my first attempts to drag and drop contacts and calendar entries from my PC to the phone (from Outlook 2007), I hit my first snag — I got an incompatibility message.

I decided at that point to use the installation disc for the USB cable, and ActiveSync, although I still preferred to move individual entries between the two devices to synchronizing everything and adding a lot of irrelevant stuff to the phone’s limited memory.

When I tried to load the software, which I was advised to do first, I realized that the version of Outlook on the disc was older than the version on my PC — which the installation also realized and stalled. I certainly wasn’t going to hose my system with an older version of Outlook.

So I connected the USB cable, and my phone popped up instantly as a device and its hard drive was visible. But there was no indication of where to drag and drop anything.

But interestingly the installation did provide a hint — it reminded me that the driver for the phone and ActiveSync were outdated and incompatible with Vista (big surprise) and provided a link to Windows Mobile online.

The key here was that I found the Windows Mobile Device Center for Vista. After a fairly long installation, which I thought had hung, I found that suddenly the Bluetooth icon was also re-enabled. That was good because I still didn’t have ActiveSync working on the SmartPhone, and it still seemed to want a server connection with Microsoft Exchange, which I don’t have.

But I wondered whether the Bluetooth icon in My Computer might now accept my Outlook contacts or calendar items, since it presumably had updated its driver to be compatible with Vista.

I dragged a dental appointment to the icon, and this time a nice green slider bar informed me that the appointment had transferred, and I was prompted by my phone to confirm that I wanted it.

I can’t show you the screenshot, but the appointment in all of its glory found its way into my SmartPhone calendar.

I did the same thing with some contacts, and they went into my address book on the phone.

It was still not without some pain — I had to reestablish the Bluetooth connection from the phone one or two times, but now my two devices are communicating.

It would still be nice to have an intuitive application on my computer that could supervise these exchanges, and I am still learning my way around the SmartPhone’s folder structure, but it’s nice to know that there is now a way to use my Outlook calendar and contacts on my phone.

I was also able to mail an appointment as a vCard attachment from the phone back to the PC, and also drag and drop a JPEG image from my Pictures folder on the PC to the phone.

But wait — there’s more — I reinserted the USB plug and this time Windows Mobile Device Center opened beyond just the driver update.

The result of going through the wizard and establishing a partnership gives me the ActiveSync application on my desktop after all (!), along with the folder browser that will allow me to investigate the layout of my SmartPhone.

Now I was able to solve the puzzle of where the transferred JPG file went — and by moving it from the phone’s My Documents to the My Pictures subfolder, it appeared in the picture album on the phone itself. And I could see it in the Device Center on my PC.

One nice thing about the SmartPhone’s operating system and folder structure is that it is very similar to the Windows XP structure, and I assume later versions will resemble Vista.

In any case, I was glad that my phone was able to partner up with my PC, and that files and info I use on one can now be easily moved to the other.

Application and System Logs
