A famous lady once said, "I love standards, there are so many to choose from."

This is the bane of the computer world, where as soon as one figures out how to make stuff work, everything changes.

In the graphics world there used to be a program called Debabelizer (in fact, there still is) that converted all of the different graphics formats to each other.

For Office users this is no longer a huge problem, as PowerPoint and even Word accept almost every kind of graphic conceivable.

But video is a different animal. I have written about using video in PowerPoint and recommended some third party tools like PFC (Plays for Certain) to help the process of conversion.

I have also covered the issues of DVD video, and using MovieMaker to edit simple video for PowerPoint in WMV format.

But there are new video formats to be reckoned with. There is YouTube, and its Adobe/Macromedia Flash Video format (FLV), and of course Shockwave (SWF).

Recently I ran into the issue of trying to use assets from a web site that were in Flash in PowerPoint. For my proof of concept demo I used the Insert Flash Object in PowerPoint, right-clicked, and linked the "URL" (since the shockwave was presumably on a web site) to a local SWF file, made sure both were in the same folder, and it worked.

Sort of.

Folks who have done this know that to play the file you need to use the Flash Player in PowerPoint, which means you may need to right-click the file and click Play, and you don't have the same pause and play functionality that you have with a conventional video file (AVI, MPG or WMV) in PowerPoint.

So I went looking for ways to convert Shockwave into a simple AVI or WMV file. I ended up with lots of pseudofree converters that needed to be registered to remove a watermark and ended up with one that did a pretty good job fairly easy, and costs just $65.

The Sothink SWF to Video Converter can create an AVI file from Shockwave in a few simple steps.

The first step is to just load the source file into the program.

Continuing through the wizard you can add a watermark or crop the size of the video.

Next you choose your output options — for PowerPoint AVI will work just fine.

There are a few more steps, play and capture. Finally click Finish and convert the file.

And you're done. You can convert more files or note the name and location of the output file.

Now it's a matter of inserting the movie into PowerPoint, which no longer requires the Flash Object Active X control.

And when the movie plays in PowerPoint, it's just a simple click to play and click to pause. It's also easier to find a spot on the slide to advance to the next slide.

Like any encoding process it is seldom perfect the first time out. I had to re-encode at a lower frame rate, change to MPEG4 codec, and lower the audio quality to make the final version a bit smoother.

PowerPoint also crashed the first time I tried the new movie in the slide. Who knows why?

On the other hand, the final product is easier to use than Flash in PowerPoint.

Now what about those FLV files from YouTube? Actually if you just want to upload to YouTube, the site will convert any standard video file for you.

Similarly if you want to create video for the iPod, other tools like Movavi and even Camtasia Studio 4 will do that for you.

Sothink doesn't seem to accept FLV as a source file. One option if you have Flash and the latest version that works with the FLV files you either download or use, is to create the SWF file first, and then use the converter.

But I recently attended Digital Hollywood where I met the folks from VT3 Studio software. Again, they're going in the other direction -- they want to usually take AVI or WMV and create FLV for YouTube users. But their encoder goes the other way too, or so they claimed, so I gave it a try.

Application and System Logs

Pearson automatically collects log data to help ensure the delivery, availability and security of this site. Web Analytics
