New Clustering Features
Beaver also credits a couple of new clustering features with helping to speed the move. "We have a very large SQL database. Through log shipping, we were able to keep 20GBs of it available during the cutover. Then we used distributed transaction processing for migrating the data with SQL replication. The net effect? Nothing went down."
The upgraded Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MDTC) in W2K3 adds the capability to replicate to multiple nodes through only a single change in configuration, Microsoft says.
Log shipping, on the other hand, is made possible by W2K3's optional quorum resource, which does not require a disk or shared bus for the quorum device. Techniques such as log shipping can then be used to make more data available on multiple nodes in a cluster.
About 8 to 10 technicians teamed up for the September migration, including staffers from both eNom and PDC, eNom's new hosting partner.
