Summary
The iPhone is a clever little device with a lot of potential, but much of its magic relies upon a fast and reliable Internet connection. By reverse-tethering the iPhone to your computer, you can greatly increase the speed of your Internet connection. If you have an activated, yet carrier-free, device (i.e., no phone/data plan), you can still use the iPhone as an iPDA. By reverse-tethering, you can get your iPDA online and enjoy the Mobile Safari experience. In addition, by setting up a proxy such as Burp, you can monitor and modify requests made to Apple from your phone. Granted, this isn't for everyone—but I had to do it, so hopefully this will helps others who share my situation!
