Podcast: Matthew David Interviews Microsoft’s Aric Cohen on Windows Presentation Foundation
In this podcast I chat with Aric Cohen from Microsoft. Aric is leading the development team building the new Windows Presentation Foundation, or WPF. WPF is the new way to display images in WinFX. WinFX is core to Windows Vista and can be added to Windows XP.
The WPF solution is not a single technology, such as Flash, but a broad platform akin to .NET. To help support WPF integration, Aric talks about emerging solutions such as the Expression Tools (Expression Graphics Designer and Expression Interactive Designer). Aric also discusses the new XML-based media description language called XAML and how you can used the latest Consumer Technology Preview of Visual Studio “Orcas” the successor to Visual Studio 2005 to build XAML technologies.
Through developing a platform with WPF, Microsoft is inviting all companies to build solutions on the WPF strategy. An example of this is Electric Rain and their XAM 3D modeling program. With XAM 3D you can build WPF-ready 3D models. Those models can be used in Orcas, directly in XAML or through Expression Interactive Designer.
Windows Presentation Foundation is a bold new move for Microsoft. So, without further ado, download the Podcast and listen to what Aric has to say. If you consider yourself an interactive designer then you will want to listen.
