Creating a Custom Screen Saver with iPhoto

Want to remember the Bridge of Sighs every time you boot up? If you've been collecting photos in iPhoto, you probably have hundreds of images of family, friends, vacations, and other subjects just sitting on your hard disk collecting digital dust. Why not use them to dress up your workspace by turning your favorites into a screen saver? With iPhoto 2 and Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, it's easy.

What Is a Screen Saver?

A screen saver is an image or series of images that appear onscreen when your computer is idle for a predetermined amount of time. Screen savers were originally created to prevent monitor burn-in that occurred when the same image appeared in the same place on screen for long periods of time. (I still have an old Mac SE/30 with an image of the menu bar burned into its 9-inch monitor. Hmmm...I think I just revealed how old I am.)

Nowadays, monitor burn-in isn't an issue. But screen savers are still widely used to display interesting imagesβ€”images like the photos in your iPhoto Photo Library.
